Country Fried Tofu (Plant Based)

A form of Southern comfort food is to "chicken fry" things. You can get the experience without the downsides!

Ingredients


  • 1 block extra firm tofu

  • ½ cup unsweetened plant milk

  • 1 teaspoon liquid smoke

  • ½ cup whole grain breadcrumbs

  • ½ cup almond flour

  • ½ cup chickpea flour

  • ¼ cup + ¼ cup nutritional yeast

  • 1 + 1 teaspoons poultry seasoning

  • 1 + 1 tablespoons garlic powder

  • 1 + 1 tablespoons onion powder

  • Ground black pepper to taste

  • Optional: 1 teaspoon liquid aminos

  • Optional: fresh sage to garnish

1. Tofu prep suggestions: use the highest firmness and/or try freezing, thawing and pressing.

2. Preheat oven to 425 degrees.

3. Tear tofu into bite-sized chunks or slice into cutlets ½ inch thick.

4. Prepare batter in one medium dish by whisking together plant milk, chickpea flour, ¼ cup nutritional yeast, 1 teaspoon of poultry seasoning, 1 tablespoon each of garlic and onion powder (+ optional liquid aminos). Season with ground black pepper to taste. Set aside. Note: consistency should be thin pancake batter.

5. Prepare breading by whisking together breadcrumbs, almond flour, and remaining - nutritional yeast, poultry seasoning, garlic powder, and onion powder. *Recommend a flat bottom dish with sides.

6. Dip each tofu piece into batter with a fork and then dredge into bread crumb mixture until well coated. Add in a single layer onto a parchment lined baking sheet.

7. Bake for 25 to 30 minutes or until golden. Enjoy!
